Blighted Ovum

Below is a collection of posts describing the period when we first discovered that the gestational sac was empty.

I went for my 1st u/s when I was 4.5 wks pregnant and my gynae said that she was not able to see anything so I was scheduled to see her again after 3 wks, that was yesterday.

Based on calculation, I should be 7.5 wks pregnant but she could only see an empty gestational sac measuring 15.85mm which indicates that the gestational age is only 5 wks. She did not offer me any solutions and just said that I should do another scan at the end of next week (Friday 21Dec) to see if the yolk sac & fetal pole is present. Otherwise, she advised me to go for D&C. So far, no blood test has been done at all.

Both my husband and I are at a loss as this is our 1st pregnancy and we're really looking forward to seeing the little one. So, we decided to seek a 2nd opinion from another doctor yesterday evening and he too only saw the empty gestational sac. (note, only transvaginal scan used)

However, he offered some interim solutions as he felt that it may be a late bloomer and I could be low in my hormones etc. So he gave me hormone injection (Pregnyl) and oral hormone pill (turinal) to help the "late bloomer" to grow.

I really need some light on this. So far, I have only experienced sore breast, hunger, gas etc I've not encounter morning sickness, cramping or spotting. The gestational sac is round and looks ok, just empty.

Please, are there anyone who had been in the same scenario as I am that went on to discover the yolk sac and the fetal pole in later weeks?"

I just went for my 2nd Pregnyl injection today and will have another on Saturday.

Somehow, I just want to feel positive so that regardless of the end results I know I've done my very best for my unborn child. I'll keep everyone posted."

just went for another scan yesterday. I should be 9 wks pregnant by now but unforturnately, we are still seeing an empty gestational sac measuring 25.5mm. It has grown frm 15.85mm at 7.5wks probably due to the hormone injections & pills that I was prescribed. The sac is really round and I just cannot believe that it is still empty sad

My doctor has written it off as a blighted ovum and did persuaded me to have a D&C but we insisted that we will let nature take its course.

I'm getting another scan at the imaging centre at the Hospital on Monday Morning and I'm really crossing my fingers that they could find my little one somewhere hiding since their machines are supposed to be more advance and powerful.

Anyway, I'm really thankful for this website as it really gave me a lot of information about blighted ovum and how cases can be misdiagnosed. I hope I could add on the the misdiagnosed stories after Monday scan. Well, God's will has no whys so we'll pray that he'll give us strength to go thru this ordeal and if things don't turn out well, HE'll grant us a smooth natural miscarriage without complication."
